A Guiding Light…

In art movement, philosophy on May 15, 2009 at 9:29 pm

What is the future to an artist? Is it just longevity of age and life or could it be a perpetuation of the present and the past. Perhaps it is neither and only our memories that change and fluctuate with the passing of time.

There is a philosophy that our lives are documented by the memories that we create and through this process so we come to exist. If this is true than it can be said that an artist creates not only from their memories and ideas but also from their existance.

It is hoped that through support, Live.Art.Die will exist not only as a memory but as concrete evidence of our existence.

It is the job of the creative to inspire those who lack the ability to bring their dreams and ideas to the visual, mental, and articulate levels that others possess.

Why Don’t the Sous Chefs Ever Win?

In Art, philosophy on May 9, 2009 at 9:41 pm

As an avid viewer of Top Chef on Bravo network, the thought crossed my mind that the sous chefs never win. Ever. In fact, they hardly ever make it to the top three. Why is that?  (BTW: For those who neither know what a sous chef is nor what the heck Top Chef has to do with Live.Art.Die; your internet works, figure it out.)

But just in case your lazy:

A sous (=under in French) chef is the second in command — he works directly under the executive chef and essentially runs the logistics of the kitchen. While he may help out with menu planning and ordering, his (or her) basic responsibility is to manage the staff and make sure that food is prepared, plated and served efficiently. In larger kitchens, there are a number of sous chefs, each with a specific area of expertise/responsibility: meats, appetizers, desserts, etc. A sous chef will generally either take over for the executive chef, or leave to run his own kitchen.

In other words, the sous chef is the executive chefs right hand man and do-gooder. They have just as much experience in the kitchen as the executive chef, but for whatever reason (be it personal or not) they are NOT the executive chef which also means that for whatever reason they simply CANNOT win Top Chef!

*Humpf*

Then one day it came to me that a striking parallel can be made from this observation. IS the reason the sous chef will never win because he is not an executive chef? If this is true does that mean the same for all fields in art?

Will the artist assistant never be the artist?
The design assistant never to be the designer?
Editorial assistant to never be the editor?

(Sigh….)

Before things can really get that dramatic, let’s also remember that Top Chef is not only a cooking competition where the works created not only have to look good but also be ingested! This fact alone could disqualify me not only EVER being Top Chef but from ever being any kind of chef at all (really it’s better for humanity that I don’t cook at all.)

Regardless.

What is interesting about this parallel is that one day the assistant will be the executive eventually. Everything falls in place eventually, and one thing the world is full of is time. So, while your waiting just keep Live.Art.Die in your thoughts!

What’s the meaning behind words?

In Art, art movement, philosophy on May 6, 2009 at 11:49 pm

It’s been on my mind sometime now to explain the meaning behind the words Live.Art.Die. But the problem is that there is no clear cut definition of the phrase. Some explain it as a response to the used, abused, over-present, and over-annoying “Live.Love.Laugh.”

Maybe.
But the poblem with this idea is figuring out whether “Laugh” is realy the opposite of “Art”. Perhaps it is the opposite, and philosophically, all art is created to inspire the humorous and jovial in people.

Or.
Maybe it’s more like that feeling you get when coming in contact with really bad “art”, and this sensation makes you keel over with laughter. (evil, maniacal laughter I hope) As this response would definitely illicit the “opposite” from “art”.

Well…
Here is what I think:

Live.Art.Die is kind of like three phases in life.

1st – we live
2nd – there is art
3rd – we die
(unfortunately this last step is unavoidable)

Hopefully, when carried out in this order, any aspiring artist could become evil…maybe…
